CA – Audits by Zip Code

Posted by salestax on September 8, 2008

Beware if you are a CA business.  It looks like their audit staff is going to be busy.  See this press release from California’s State Board of Equalization.  Make sure your licenses are updated and properly posted in your storefront window.

I’m unsure how I feel about this.  On one hand, I’m glad to see the state is making sure their in-state businesses are compliant, instead of going after out-of-state companies and punishing them for doing business with their state.  On the other hand, I’m wondering how many small businesses are going to be harrassed right out of their savings to handle what the auditors might find.

If you’re a small business getting caught up in this, be tenacious in making sure the auditor actaully works while on premises and don’t be intimidated by the mere prescence of the CA BOE.

Also, don’t be afraid to get some good sales tax help either!  Your CPA likely doesn’t have the best answers when it comes to sales tax compliance; they’re good at financial papers and income taxes, but generally not sales taxes.  There are plenty of Sales Tax Specialty Consultants who would do a much better job.
