CA Sales Tax Rate to go up 1%

Posted by salestax on February 20, 2009

According to one of the “BIG4,”  the temporary increase is to be effective April 1, 2009 to either June 30th, 2011 or, if approved by voters, June 30, 2012.

They say it’s temporary. It’s part of the new budget deal. There’s no details for when it’ll go into effect, as I haven’t seen the final signed bills yet, but I’ll keep and eye on it and let my readers know.

Still haven’t found when, but here’s a link to a synopsis of the whole budget.  The sales tax piece is in the 2nd topic under revenue increases.  The increase anticipates almost $6B for the state of CA.

This the Governor’s proposed budget for 09-10.  Looks like it was originally supposed to be a 1.5% increase in sales tax through, 2011 and it was supposed to be effective as of March 1st.  See page 64.   It was also to expand sales taxes to be added to more services too.

You’ll know more when I know more.  I’m still waiting for the finalized bills to be signed.
