WA – Sales Tax Exemption for Hybrids

Posted by salestax on February 23, 2009

  • *UPDATE 4.1.09:  The tax man cometh and the tax man taketh away.  WA legislatures mulling the idea of removing this exemption already in light of the state’s current economic outlook and fixing it with the next budget.  You can read more about by viewing the Sales/Use Tax News page and viewing the recent news articles I’ve selected to share with you.  Alternatively you can read it directly here.

As of 1/1/09, WA state has offered an exemption of sales taxes paid on high-mileage hybrid and clean alternative fuel vehicles:  min 40MPG.  The offer is good until the end of 2010.

You can read about this here.  And they also give a link to those vehicles that currently have 40MPH EPA estimates here

However, if you’re leasing one of these vehicles past 2010, then be aware that the lease payments after that date will be subject to sales tax.  There is a clearer understanding of this presented by WA state here.

  1. Hi,
I’m returning to the US from Asia on May 27th 2010. I want to buy a Hybrid Prius.
Is the Tax exempt for High Mileage Hybrids still in effect.

    Thank you, Donald James

Unfortunately, the full sales tax exemption no longer applies to Hybrid vehicles in Washington State. The only thing you’ll get on a Prius is the .3% Motor Vehicle sales/use tax. If you were to purchase a vehicle using alternative fuels, you would still get the full sales tax exemption.
