New York City – Sales Tax Changes 8/1/09 (Correction)

Posted by salestax on July 28, 2009

The 2 most most public affected changes for purchasing items in New York City as of August 1, 2009:

1.  City rate of sales tax increasing by 1/2%, now totaling 8.875%.

2.  Clothing under  OVER $110 will now be taxable.

See the notice from New York, here.

Our apologies for the confusion with item #2.  Formerly, NY City exempted clothing at the city level regardless of the price.  New York City repealed that exemption, but is still abiding by the State level exemption – meaning that clothing items costing less than $110 are exempt from sales tax.

the cost is repealed, and New York City will conform to the New York State exemption for
clothing and footwear costing less than $110 per item or pair. As of August 1, 2009, purchases
of clothing and footwear costing $110 or more per item or pair in New York City are subject to
the full 8% rate of tax. Purchases costing less than $110 remain fully exempt.
